After a mediocre race for some of our runners at the Springwater Meet, all were excited for the TVRA Central Cross Country championships at Springbank Park the following week on October 19. The air was tense: two of our Grade 9 boys, William Vrolyk and Julian VanRavenhorst, who both had a good chance of qualifying for WOSSAA individually, gamely decided to join the Grade 10 Junior Boys team to run an extra kilometre and bolster the team placing, a suggestion made by the enterprising Mac Stanley. On that morning, Jonathan Vanderspek was also missing his right shoe, but soon retrieved it with the help of Mrs. Vrolyk. We were ready.

Esther deVries gracefully finished a clean 18th in her Junior Girls race to qualify for WOSSAA (Top 20). The Junior Boys team, now six strong, started swiftly, led by powerhouse Jonathan. On the second lap, Jonathan disappeared, having injured his fated right foot. The other boys ran past, looking slightly despondent over this development but still running determinedly. Hopes had gone from high to low for the boys once they saw that Jonathan was out, and yet everyone had continued trying their best. William had advanced from 30th to 25th to 21st, finally finishing 18th. Julian finished next at 37th, Mac at 39th, then Luke Schuurman and Isaac Branderhorst after them. “Do you think we’ll still get to WOSSAA Ms. Lam?” A fragile question. At last, the results were posted: the team had just made it!

Congratulations to the boys and Esther, who will run at WOSSAA this Thursday, and a well done to William and Julian for holding their own in a higher division! Their goal this Thursday: to run that course even faster than they did last week.

We are looking for two students and an adult who can volunteer to help marshall at the race: 10:00-3:00 Thursday October 27. Contact slam@ldcss.ca.
